At what age can I start training my puppy?

Ideally, you can begin to train a puppy at seven weeks which is the earliest age at which training will take hold.

Is it ever too late to start training my dog or, said differently, can old dogs learn new tricks?

It is never too late, as long as the dog is in good health. We often train dogs as old as ten years, with our usual good results.

How can I tell if my dog needs training?

Apart from the obvious signs of doing things that you wish the dog wouldn’t, like urinating in your home or jumping up on family and friends, or growling and snapping and generally ‘acting out’, my response is that all dogs need training. If we followed this rule, fewer dogs would be in shelters, having been abandoned by families who didn’t know to handle the dog.

Will my dog still love me if I train him/her?

Dogs, like people, need structure to help them manage their lives and to fulfill their roles. They respond with even more love at being able to please their owners and to meet the owners’ expectations. Your dog will love you even more for having given them the gift of training!

Will training change my dog’s happy personality?

If your dog is making you happy, your dog will be happy. S/he will be just as friendly and playful as always but you will decide when play time is over and your dog will happily acknowledge your instruction.

What is the difference between The Heinz Method and all the other methods in the market?

We do not try to scare or abuse a dog into submission. Nor do we just “reinforce” behavior without having set an example of what behavior is expected. We working effectively and quickly, setting expectations and reinforcing positive performance. Very soon your dog will understand what is expected and that meeting the expectations makes you, his/her owner, very happy. Giving you happiness is the reward that your dog will seek.

Where is the training done?

All training is done in your home which is also where your dog lives and will offer the most positive reinforce for the training.

Have you ever met a dog that you couldn’t train?

No. Some issues might take longer to address and correct but we have always been successful with every dog brought to us. More often, it takes us longer to train the owner than the dog and the owner is usually the real problem to be solved.
